In a short question-and-answer session, we asked Brandon about the value of earning his Master of Laws (LLM) in Taxation degree online at Villanova:

Q: What is your professional background?

A: I am an attorney and shareholder at McAfee & Taft, Oklahoma’s largest law firm. I serve as the leader of the firm’s Employee Benefits and Executive Compensation group, which is one of the largest of its kind in the region. Prior to returning to my hometown and joining McAfee & Taft, I practiced with Baker & McKenzie in Dallas and with Alston & Bird in Washington, D.C. I represent a broad range of clients, from Fortune 500 corporations and manufacturers to farmers, hospitals and Indian tribal governments. Q: Why did you choose Villanova for your Master of Laws (LLM) in Taxation degree?

A: Villanova’s tax program is nationally recognized, and the online format is second to none. Between an active law practice here in Oklahoma, my wife and four kids — who are all in school — the online format isn’t just helpful to my lifestyle; it’s essential.

Q: Why did you choose to pursue the LLM in Taxation degree?

A: I truly enjoy learning, and I think the LLM in tax will really deepen my understanding of some of the tax concepts that underlie many of the employee benefits issues that I deal with on a daily basis.

Q: How has your experience been in the online LLM program so far?

A: I am currently finishing up my second class, and it’s been outstanding. The online format is easy to use and follow. The technology is intuitive and user-friendly, and connects you to the Villanova experience. I visited campus in person recently and the faculty went out of their way to welcome and encourage me.

Q: How are you applying what you’ve learned in the program?

A: The tax classes are excellent and I’m learning concepts each week that strengthen my knowledge of the core tax issues underlying my employee benefits practice.

Q: How are you planning to use your LLM degree in the future?

A: I am not pursuing this degree to get a different job or try to win more business. But I do think the deep dive into the substantive tax concepts will help my professional development for many years to come.

Q: Anything else you’d like potential students in the program to know?

A: I would encourage potential students to go for it. I thought about this for many years before I actually committed. It does require a commitment and it is hard work, but I’m so glad to be a part of the program.
